San Francisco's defense picked off Denver quarterback Kyle Orton in each of the first three series of the game helping the 49ers to a 17-16 win over the Broncos in the first preseason game of the 2009 NFL season. 49ers QB Shaun Hill started the game behind center and led the team to a field goal in his only series of the game. He finished two-of-two passing for 41 yards, but was sacked twice. Alex Smith and Damon Huard threw touchdown passes for San Francisco (both to FB Brit Miller). Denver backup QB Chris Simms nearly orchestrated a late comeback tossing two second-half touchdowns, including a 52-yarder with 1:52 left. However, his two-point conversion attempt for the lead was intercepted by Reggie Smith in the endzone.
