M78 - Illuminated dust

Nerriga, NSW

A neighbour in space of the much more famous Great Orion Nebula, Messier 78 sits about 1600 light-years away just north of the belt of Orion. It's a dusty complex 5 light-years long, with stars half-hidden amongst dusty wreaths. The brighter blue ones illuminate the dust by reflection, and there are many dimmer stars buried and reddened by the layers of dust.

LRGB combination (110,20,20,20) @ 5min exposures, Atik 460EX, Astronomik deep sky LRGB filters, flats & bias corrected. 200mm f/5 Newtonian, HEQ5Pro, processed in PixInsight. hide exif
