NGC1097

Nerriga, NSW

A very nice barred spiral galaxy in Fornax, and about 45 million light-years away. There are some distortions in one of the arms from the satellite galaxy, NGC1097A that appears amongst the end of the right-hand spiral arm. The galaxy has a very active nucleus, and the core is surrounded by a tiny ring of bright star formation. The core is the source of four optical jets, two of which are barely visible streaking to the upper left.
