Grus Quartet galaxies

Loftus, NSW

An attractive grouping of four spiral galaxies located about 70 million light-years away in the southern constellation Grus. The pair of galaxies at left are NGC7599 and NGC7590, the central galaxy of the four is NGC7582, and the circular face-on spiral to the right is NGC7552. Delicate knots of bluish star-forming regions are visible in some of the spiral arms, while the cores contain older stars, giving a more yellowish colour.

Lots of distant galaxies and galaxy clusters are visible in the background. Above the pair of galaxies at left is Abell galaxy cluster AS1111, nearly 700 million light-years away, which has at its core two yellowish ellipticals and a blue spiral/irregular galaxy.
