Most churches don't want tripods, as they are certainly distracting from the carefully planned look of any church. But many allow NON-flash pictures. Few allow flash pictures, though St. Peter's does! And some don't allow pictures at all.
For steady pictures, you can usually find a pillar or rail or wall to steady your camera with though, and image stabilization is big now in cameras and lenses.

Thank you so much for the photographs. I am often searching for new photos of St. Peters. The works of Michaelangelo are of particular interest. I hope to visit Rome one day.
