The architectural elements across the top, except for the triangular spandrels, dividing the main
themes, are painted and not real. This is seen from the pew against the back wall.

Be sure to also get the Ross King book I mention below. It's all about the times and the interaction between all those greats while focusing on his travails during the painting of the ceiling. And it sets the record straight (through Michelangelo's own letters and his friends') on some of the misinterpretations by Irving Stone. Fascinating book. Thanks for your note!

Ross King - 'Michelangelo and the Pope's Ceiling' ... I wish I had.
