Most pictures in this gallery show the details and variety of colors of the headdresses that ladies from the area of Llanes wear as part of their regional costume in festivals and holidays. The brocade headscarf is folded and tied in a particular way leaving two corners on top known as "repique" (aligned corners). The origin of this unique way of folding the headscarf is unclear, although it has probably evolved from older headdresses sometimes described as shocking in chronicles from the 16th century. Although the oldest historical reference dates back to the year 1318 when ordinances were issued in Asturias to regulate the size and luxury of women headdresses due to the lower classes financial inability to afford them. The rest of the costume is profusely decorated with laces, brocades, velvet and jet bead embroideries. Its current design is probably from mid 19th century, it can weigh as much as 15 kg depending on the amount of jet used, and its price can exceed 3,000 Euro.
Pictures in this gallery were taken in Andrín - Llanes on August 15th 2012 during the Feast of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, when ladies dressed in the regional costume sing traditional songs during the offering ceremony of bread and flowers to the Virgin.
