Thresher shark diving with Evolution Diving, Malapascua Island. The pics are shot without strobes, so whilst the lighting could be better, these are RESPONSIBLE pictures. Thresher sharks are actually pretty skittish and easily startled by flashes. The last thing we want to do is drive these guys away... permanently.
Early in the morning (these pics were shot around 5.30am on two separate days) the sharks come up from the deep to around 25 metres and swim in triangular shaped patterns. Cleaner wrasses attach themselves and rid the sharks of parasites. The wrasses are about 20-30cm long, so I estimate the sharks are around 3 metres long.
The time-of-day, location, depth and swimming patterns are remarkably constant, producing ideal conditions for photography of these remarkable creatures.
I was diving with Evolution Diving - a brand new operation set up by Matt Reed, a very experienced technical dive instructor. Check them out at http://www.evolution.com.ph
