A series of photos from a 2 day visit to the Krakatau (Krakatoa) island group. We did a bit of scuba diving around Rakata (what's left of the original Krakatau), Pulau Panjung and Anak Krakatau (son of Krakatau). Anak Krakatau is the new island in the middle of the group - it first breached out of the sea in 1928 and is growing at 5 metres per year. It's now about 350 metres high. A highlight of the visit was landing on Anak several times, the last time comprising several hours and a hike up onto a ridge. Too dangerous to go all the way to the crater. Fascinating to observe how life (fauna and flora) has taken hold on this 80-year-old island. Take notice of the photos showing the different types of trees, shrubs, flowers, the snake; even the log on the beach with termite bores is interesting for what it means for Krakatau's new life cycle. Did the log originate from Anak Krakatau or did it wash up there from elsewhere, possibly bringing new life ashore?
