Falaise Gap

Chambois, Normandy

This is the view over what was the Falaise pocket. A massive German force was trapped in this area of French countryside between the British, American and Polish armies in August 1944. The death toll was awful, but 30,000 German troops still escaped. Local scrap dealers were still earning a living clearing the scrap metal from wrecked German armour until the mid 1970s- 30 years after the battle.
