Pointe du Hoc Cratering

Pointe du Hoc, Normandy

Evidence of cratering following an aerial and seaborne barrage on German emplacements at Pointe du Hoc. it turned out that the Germans had moved their artillery back about a mile from the cliffs prior to the barrage to avoid damage. The US Rangers had to climb the cliffs in the picture under fire using grappling hooks and ropes before the attack even started.
