Taiwan Folk Arts Museum, Beitou, North of Taipei

On a wet, cold and grey day, I decided to see how the Sony DT 18-250 mm / f3.5-6.3 would perform on a museum trip where no flash would be allowed. I would normally take my Sigma 30 mm / f1.4 on a trip like this.

The Taiwan Folk Arts Museum is housed in one of Taiwan's largest surviving Japanese-style wooden structures, built around a tree-shaded courtyard.

It began life in 1921 as a Japanese officers'club, and during World War II became a rest house for members of the kamikaze squadron. After Taiwan reverted to Chinese rule in 1945 the site was taken over by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Renamed the Chiashan Guest House, it served as a retreat for government dignitaries and foreign VIPs. The Provincial Government eventually sold the site and Mr. Chang Chun-ming converted it into the Taiwan Folk Arts Museum. It has recently re-opened after 5 years of renovation; the area is famous for its hot springs, but the sulphur in the air rots the wood of these old buildings. The present display is about wedding ceremonies in Taiwan through the ages: Japanese, Taiwanese and Aboriginal.
