Hi Andrew, do you have a bigger crop of the raptor, this is a bit tiny to see the distinguishing features. TQ.

Just checked: we were on the Lower Kinabatangan River

This was taken in riverine habitat about 2.5 hrs upstream from Sandakan in Sabah. Others have also speculated on Wallace's Hawk-Eagle but nobody is prepared to stick their neck out. The common eagle here was of course Crested Serpent Eagle, which I know well as tthey fly over my home in HK. Does this help?

Andrew,
Exact location, altitude, riverine, habitat? It is probably a Wallace's Hawk-Eagle, but I would need a location to make a better educated guess. Major confusion species are juveniles of another Spizaetus sp. (alboniger), and also Aviceda jerdoni.
