Sitting here in my office at CLK watching egrets and a cormorant sitting on rocks out on the water, wishing I had my camera. Knowing I could never capture wonderful photographs like these. Last week I saw an egret struck by what I assumed was a kite, 40 feet away from my window; 4-500 yards away from the runway centreline.

Wow, these pictures are amazing! Take the grey-backed thrush for instance - you can see every detail of its feathers.(How can you still call yourself an amateur?) I never knew there were pied crows - are they rare?

Hi Dennis, Red-vented bulbuls (or Sooty-headed) are quite local now - by no means as common as Red-whiskered and Chinese bulbul. I see them most weeks when I walk around Ho Chung but I haven't had a chance to take any photos yet. They are too skittish. I will try to get one for you. Mai Po remains wonderful especially at migration time. If you grew up in HK then you are probably reading or have read Gweilo by Martin Booth - should bring back memories.

Hey Andrew, where are the red-vented bulbuls? I used to take potshots at them with a slingshot as a kid. Mai Po must have been a great birding place with its rice fields, etc.

Andrew I am still in amazment at how well you do this. I can take hundreds of photos of humans and the trick is that you can talk to them to try and get them to do what you want or just wait and i comes out naturally. But with brids they fly off. Well done.

Patience, Duncan, Patience! I was at Mai Po again yesterday and Tai Po Kau today and not a decent image to show. Sometimes they move just as you press the shutter too!
