April 14

A mural commmeorating Old Highway 80 which crossed the continent beginning in San Diego and ending in Savannah, Georgia. A distance of about 2,500 miles (4,025km).
Specifically the mural shows the crossing of the Cuyamaca Mountains east of San Diego which still requires traffic to climb from below sea level to well over 4,000 feet.
Only small portions of the Highway exist in California having been superseded by Interstate Highways. It did pass within a few feet of this mural which is at the corner of El Cajon Blvd. and Winona Ave.

That reminds me of so many old sections of road in Britain. Sometimes just a few yards that have now been turned into lay-bys (refuges), others through towns and villages, but most still exist in one form or another. An exception locally is one that has been turned back to nature following construction of a tunnel.

It's a very good artistic feature. I enjoy seeing things like this. V

Very beautiful. It's a shame to see these old highways disappear. V

Cool find and capture. I had the same impression as David regarding hearing about another historic east-west route. Per Martin's comment, I frequently ride on some parts of Hwy 80 in the historic Tombstone / Bisbee area of Arizona.

Good clear shot. Nice how the mural depicts the topography. V

such a long trip might have been most economical on a motorbike, and certainly most adventurous...interesting to learn of another east-west route apart from #66..
