Nikkor 200-500mm f/5.6E ED VR AF-S Lens Test

I had the opportunity to test this new Nikon lens at the San Diego Zoo today.
First impressions are heavy (5.07 lbs.) well built and fairly fast focusing.
The image quality is quite good at 500mm as can be seen here in this image of a Malaysian Tiger.

Shot through glass using nonopod, WB corrected, no crop, minimal processing.

Nikon D700
1/250s f/5.6 at 500.0mm iso1600 (Nikkor 200-500mm f/5.6E ED VR AF-S) full exif

other sizes: small medium large original auto

Such a stunning portrait of the tiger. The lens sounds very large and heavy but takes sharp photos. V

This cat was focusing on something going on behind it. It is said that tigers are the most like our pet cats in behavior. A 5 pound lens could be tiresome to lug around, I think. Love the nice sharp detail. Voted.

this lens has serious reach, and the results are certainly impressive..
