Looking Dangerous

I was out shooting in the Cactus Garden with our photo group when I came across this spider.
I've never seen anything like it. It was about 4 inches / 10 cm long.
It was difficult getting a good shot with the lighting conidtions and movement of the web.
Can anybody identify this?

Great capture...but not something I'd want to meet in the garden, dark or anywhere else! - Racine

It may look fearsome but is quite harmless to humans... great shot Walter.

Great shot of this garden spider. They are all around my sister's place. They are large and very cool, I think. I like this shot. Very well taken of this specimen.

Excellent shot, Walter! A real colorful beauty. As for ID, my guess would be from the genus Argiope. Did you notice any zig-zag patterns in the web?
pkocinski03-Oct-2010 23:12
Looks down right nasty...maybe you want to do a study of it while it's in a glass jar :-)

So, this photo in "original" on pbase is approximately life size?
