Beluga whales appear more like dolphins than the more spectacular whales
that fascinate seagoing visitors to Prince William Sound. Here in the
Turnagain Arm portion of Cook Inlet, an hour east of Anchorage, a large pod
of silvery-white belugas, perhaps no longer than 20 feet at best, gently
showed only a small portion of their unusually bent backs to our gaze.
