I worked at the San Diego Zoo for 16 years, the first 11 with the Gorilla Tropics Team. In the summer of 1999 I was privileged to spend 10 months hand raising Zuri, an orphaned Pygmy chimp. Also referred to as the Bonobo chimp, Zuri was like my little brother or the son I never had. For his first 8 months he was raised in the nursery/Children's Zoo, then he came to us. I played with Zuri for an hour everyday till he was 18 months old, then accompanied by 2 Senior Keepers, he was FedEx-ed to the Milwaukee Zoo.
