Me

I’m Alfred Toth and this is a little bit about me,

My story begins in San Diego, Ca. in the mid 1960´s. At that time our house, which is now in the middle of suburbia, sat on the edge of a vast amount of wild open space. At the young age of five or six years I remember going on small hikes with my father and becoming fascinated by the rocks, plants, animals, and the birds around me, as a result I developed a passion for nature early in life.

My curiosity for the natural world grew and I planted my first garden while a senior in high school. In college I studied Landscape Architecture and Horticulture, and began my career as a semi-professional backpacker, and wildflower photographer. I think my greatest single passion was and still is the collecting and growing of tropical plants.

Through the years I achieved many job titles and certifications including, California Certified Nurseryman, Nationally Certified Wilderness Guide, Wilderness First Responder (rescue medicine), Senior Keeper working with Primates at the San Diego Zoo, Fitness Instructor, and Registered Yoga Teacher.

I discovered yoga in 2000 while working at the San Diego Zoo. I found yoga to be very empowering and with my yoga practice came a change in my diet and my whole outlook on life. By the year 2008, after several conservation projects in the Peruvian Amazon, I decided to quit my job and moved to Cusco, Peru.

Cusco gave me the opportunity to start a new life, to be reborn so to speak, and along with opening my own yoga studio, I began to spend more time in the kitchen. In 2012 big things happened, first I became manager of the biggest bar in Cusco, with its humble kitchen I put Tex-Mex food on the Peruvian map. I also had the privilege to meet and cook with world famous chef Laura Bridge. With Laura’s encouragement I was able to take it to the next level in the kitchen.

After almost five years in Peru I decided to move to central Mexico, San Miguel de Allende to be exact, and it was there that I found my wife and soulmate Liliana. She’s like a beautiful flower who wakes up smiling, and nudges me when I need that little extra push. She is also the lucky beneficiary of all my kitchen exploits.

Here in San Miguel, along with teach yoga, I specialize in Mexican food, both teaching cooking classes and catering small events. In Spanish I like to say, “La Cocina Es Mi Oficina” “The Kitchen Is My Office”. Many people have asked me, ¨why do you like to cook¨and I reply, ¨because I like to eat¨, and I eat good. I also like to share my food with friends and family, that´s my way to bring happiness to others.
