WEST GRINSTEAD OLD RAILWAY STATION SITE

The former West Grinstead station was on the Horsham to Shoreham line which was closed as a result of the government's 'Beeching Axe' in 1966. It was turned into the Downs Link path for walkers, horse riders and cyclists by West Sussex County Council in the late 1970s and provides a road-free route between the North and South Downs.
West Grinstead was always a pretty station with high banks on either side and was lit by paraffin Tilly lamps. It had a goods yard with a cattle loading bay and facilities for handling horse boxes as there were hunt kennels and a national stud in the locality.
Although the main station buildings were demolished soon after closure, the station platforms have survived. The local parish council has erected a replica station sign in the vicinity, and an old railway signal has also been installed. There is also an old railway carriage which has been turned into an information point for visitors.
