After the fish market here closes about 8.30 am, the fishermen adjourn to the local bars, or relax in groups, chatting or playing cards in the sun. They fish at night for the scabbard fish who live at depths of over 800m, but are at their nearest point to the surface when feeding at night. We were told that no one has ever seen a live scabbard fish, as they do not survive the loss of pressure when being brought up to the fishing boats.
