Discovered and named by Simon Fraser in 1808, the gorge suddenly narrows to 35m wide at this point on the Fraser River.
The first railroad took 4 years to complete through here...started in 1880. The second railroad on the other side was blasted through in 1914 and this severely damaged and blocked the sockeye salmon runs. In 1966, after 30 years of planning & construction by the government, fishways at the sides of the river were completed.
