South side of the Market Cross.
Built in 1501 on the site of an earlier wooden cross, originally to provide shelter for poor people selling their produce. It is said to be the finest in Britain and stands in the centre of the city at the crossroads of the four main streets. Until the beginning of the nineteenth century the Cross was used as a market-place.
