This spot, a bay on an arm of the fjord, is where theGerman battleship Tirpitz anchored, 'hidden' from the allied forces, for nearly two years during WWII.
The Tirpitz, sister ship of the famous Bismarck, was the largest battleship in the German Navy. In October 1944 she was badly damaged in Altenfjord by a British midget submarine, and then later bombed twice after this before being moved to near Tromso where, as not now being fully seaworthy, she became a static artillery battery. Tirpitz was finally sank after being bombed on November 12, 1944.
