This is the front garden of a landless peasant and his family in the early-mid 17th century, and would have been used just to grow herbs for medicinal purposes and scattering over the floors of
the cottagr and outhouses. Edible weeds such still formed part of the daily soup or stew – the flowers and vegetables from newly discovered lands had not yet reached this social level.
