This barn from Cowfold, West Sussex, is a typical late-medieval example. The timbers have been tree-ring dated which revealed that they were felled in 1536, so the barn was probably built soon after this. Very few farm buildings, other than barns such as this, survive from the medieval period and most date from the 17th century and later. This may be because most barns were soundly built by professional carpenters, while other farm buildings would have been constructed more cheaply, perhaps by the farmers themselves. This barn was dismantled in 1980 and rebuilt at Singleton in 1988 with an open-sided shelter to protect animals like these cattle.
