St Mary the Virgin's Church dates from the 11th century and has been virtually unaltered since medieval times. Until recently the church was known as North Stoke Church. However in 2007, archaeologists researching church records in the archives at Kew, discovered a letter dated 1275 from a bishop to King Edward I which named the church as St Mary, and it was re-dedicated as such.
North Stoke is a medieval village which has lost most of its population. It is at the end of a narrow dead-end lane, just over a mile off a main road at Amberley, and is now just farm buildings and a farmhouse. The church was declared redundant in 1992 when the Churches Conservation Trust took over its care, and it is a Grade I listed building for its architectural and historical importance.
