MARTYRS' MEMORIAL

Woodmancote - Near Henfield - West Sussex

These two humble Woodmancote men, a carpenter and a farm labourer, were among the 17 Lewes Martyrs who gave their lives for refusing to renounce their protestant faith for catholicism.
In the court, Thomas Harland was charged with refusing to go to church. He said that he would not while the services were in Latin, which he could not understand, so he would not be any better for attending.
John Oswald refused to answer his charges unless it was face to face to his accuser/s (officially Queen Mary Tudor). He said he was not afraid of faggots and fire.
This memorial in the churchyard of St Peter's was dedicated in July 2010
