Hells Gate, discovered and named by Simon Fraser in 1808, the gorge suddenly narrowed considerably at this point on the Fraser River.
Building the first railroad through here started in 1880 and took 4 years to complete. The second railroad on the other side was blasted through in 1914, severely damaging and blocking the sockeye salmon runs. In 1966, after 30 years of planning & construction, fishways at the sides of the river were completed.
