A 5 NOV 10

Rothenburg - Bavaria - Germany

Clocks and sundial on the gables of what was originally the city councillors' tavern which dates from 1446......the Ratstrinktube in the Markplatz.
The main clock was installed in 1683. Since 1910, the two windows located either side of the town clock open on the hour between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. and between 8 p.m. and 10 p.m. to show the legendary "Master Draught". This legend goes back to 1631 during the the Thirty Years War when catholic troops attacked and occupied protestant Rothenburg. The catholic general threatened to plunder and destroy the city. On a whim he promised to spare the town from destruction if a councillor could manage to drink all of an enormous tankard containing over 3 litres of wine in one go. The former mayor accomplished this task and so saved his city.
