13TH CENTURY PARISH CHEST

Nuthurst Church - West Sussex

Made from one hollowed out log, this dates from the 13th century or earlier. The heavy security fastenings of Sussex iron indicate that it was used to store and carry valuables, and took tithes and taxes from the parish across to France in the early part of the 13th century as up until 1230 the parish of Nuthurst belonged to the Benedictine Abbey of Fécamp in Normandy.
