On the north side of Binnenhof Square stands the Prison Gate. Built in 1296 as the gatehouse of the Binnenhof, it was converted into a prison in the 15th century. The De Witt brothers, accused of the attempted murder of Prince William III, were murdered here in 1672. On the north of the square is a monument to Jan de Witt.
