The Cross of Sacrifice was built on top of a German pill box in the centre of the cemetery, at the suggestion of King George V who visited the cemetery in 1922 as it neared completion. The pill box wall can still be seen at the base, seen in this image. The inscription below it reads: THIS WAS THE TYNE COT BLOCKHOUSE CAPTURED BY THE 3RD AUSTRALIAN DIVISION
