Situated off Roedean in East Brighton, the Marina, with over 1500 berth's, is now the largest Marina complex in Europe.
At high tide it is below sea level, so a sea wall was built for protection. A lock provides access to the inner harbour, and this is also one of the biggest non-commercial locks in Europe. In 1978 the Marina was opened by the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh. In 1985 a superstore was built and a village square development with shops and restaurants, followed by apartments and houses overlooking the inner harbour. A large multistorey car park, cinema complex and bowling alley were completed in 1988. The Waterfront and its boardwalk opened in 2002. Its hotel and restaurants directly overlook the quays. The Marina breakwaters are also popular with anglers and provide good coastal fishing spots.
