I don't surf Pbase as much as I used to, but a quick check of my "favorites" list show that you are still turning out great photos. Take care.

now how's that for poor research!!!!I thought you were Australian!Sorry.Anyways it's pretty close although not geographically. A joke around here is,the first white settlers of Australia were criminals from England. Those who settled Newfoundland never got caught.

Hi Ian,
Just wanted to leave a little note to say how much I enjoyed your images. I especially like your infra red shots and some of your photo a day shots are absolutely beautiful. At the moment I'm shooting with my modest Minolta Dimage 7Hi but I'm looking to buy the EOS 10D soon. I know I will improve my photography no end once I get hold of that baby!

Regards and keep up the good work,

Geoff.

Hi Ian

You must love what you do? I have just been on to your website, your pictures are so beautiful and so peaceful, wonderful settings. I enjoy looking at your infer red landscapes. I don't want to sound corny, but looking at your images really inspirer's me to do more photographs, obviously it will not be as great as your, but hay I least I'm trying.
I did A Level black and white at college, mostly landscapes. Your would of been a wonderful teacher to have.

If you do read this message, I would like asked you that when ever or if ever you need a photography assistant could you be kine enough to contact me at my email address.?
It would be a wonderful leaning experience for me and a Chance of a life time to be able to learn from a photographer like you.
I could look at your pictures all day and would never get board.

Thank you

Lilly

Thanks, Ian. I hope you don't mind me "borrowing" your basic idea. I changed the color scheme and tweaked it. I like yours a lot better but I didn't want to just copy it exactly. I'm going to keep working on the thumbnail boxes. I have a few ideas but haven't implemented them yet.
Ian Chappell19-Oct-2003 15:30
Hi there... you need to make the "padding-top:" all the same size in px terms then you should be OK... cool CSS, kinda familiar tho!
A Reid19-Oct-2003 15:23
Ian, Check out my updated style sheet. What is causing the pics to jump when the cursor is passed over them? Thanks. http://www.pbase.com/areid/test_gallery
Ian Chappell18-Oct-2003 13:41
That's a great picture and have to agree a little burnt out on the chin. To answer your question I have to say I can't compare it to the G2 as I have never handled one but there is a focus issue which I have only experienced in relatively low light. It's very frustrating and drives me nuts too. However in daylight there isn't a problem. Re the telephoto lens, I don't have one for the G3 but I do have the Canon wide angle lens WC-DC58N which I use with a Lensmate an example can be found herehttp://www.pbase.com/image/22357485 It's a little on the large side and a bit of a faff to use but gives good results.
A Reid18-Oct-2003 04:07
Ian, I just added a new cat picture. It's a little hot on her chin but I was happy with the sharpness of it which brings me to my next question: does the G3 have auto focus problems like the G2? It drives me nuts at times. Also, what type of telephoto lens do you use and do you have any examples to compare? I thinking about making that my next purchase. Thanks.
Ian Chappell16-Oct-2003 05:04
Thanks for your comments. Yes you are correct, the backgrounds are kept on a hidden gallery page along with a few other things that wouldn't be of interest or are relavent. The style sheet has been developed from a version of "webdev" with a little trial and error and a some ideas from other galleries. If you are interested to see how it's put together go to my gallery and right click on the background and if you are using IE do a "View Source", details of the CSS can now be seen.

BTW you have a very impressive gallery with the G2 - love the cat pics! Keep up the good work and good luck with the forthcoming arrival!
A Reid16-Oct-2003 01:26
Ian,

I love you site. Where did you come up with the background color and style for your gallery? Do you keep it on a hidden gallery/page? I'm not very HTML literate so any help you can pass along would be great. Thank you.

Thank you for you comments Ian, I am a CSS junkie! I have a big collection of them! :-)

Ian,

I'm currently beginning a scale wooden ship model of the Endeavour, when completed it will be roughly 30" long, I've been searching the internet for information on coloring and details and wanted to thank you for the wonderful pictures, they have been the best source of information that I've found todate, by chance you wouldn't have more photos would you?

Anyway thanks again for the help you've provided.

Thanks for your feed back...I believe I'll go for the S400 although it's lacks of manual control...and after checking the review of the camera found in dpreview.com, I think I'll give the "point & shot camera class" a chance!

Soon you will be able to see my first steps in pbase

Best regards from Chile,

Alfredo

PD. I still think you´ve got the touch....
Ian Chappell26-Aug-2003 11:59
Hi Alfredo

Thanks for your kind comments re my S400 shots, I would like to think I've got the "touch" as you described but alas I have to confess it's mostly down to the post processing. I copy the images to be uploaded to Pbase into a new folder and resize them to 800x600, then check and adjust levels, up the saturation a tad - no more than +20 then sharpen them using Fred Miranda's sharpening action available from www.fredmiranda.com . The frame is added, again using a Fred Miranda action and finally a "save for web" to bring the file size down small enough for Pbase and that's about it. Oh yes I also copy the EXIF info from the original using BreezeBrowser.

I think the S400 really is a stunning camera that's really hard to beat in the "point and shoot" class. It's small enough to be carried in one's pocket with no problems. Image quality is almost as good as the G3 and prints to A3 are excellent. The battery doesn't last too long but a spare is small and light enough to take along anyway.

Hope you find this useful...

Kind regards

Ian

Hi Ian!

I were browsing s400 photos in pbase triying to find out how good the camera is and your shots are by far the best ones!...

The only I do not understand is why are the samples so different, some looks flat with no punch but yours are so detailed and so sharp...Do you do post procesing or it is just that you got the "touch" :)

May I ask you if you are happy with the performance of the S400?

Would you send me your comments on the camera?

Looking forward of hearing from you,

with best regards,

Alfredo
