B6: As with sign writing, engraving is less common in today’s society. Traditionally it was the ancient Romans, who created architectural lettering, and to their credit much of their work still exists today in Rome and across Europe. These examples show original engravings from Rome as well as their modern day equivalents, once again displaying how technology in the form of machines has replaced the hand and chisel. In today’s society this technique is used to create authenticity, often used on public statues and civic buildings.
