Definition B: A posted command, warning or a direction.

B3: This is arguably the most complex group of photographs in relation to semiotics. I have selected photographs which show signs that are still legible although for a number of different reasons have been altered from their original form. In semiotic terms, Noise has been added between the Signifier and the Signified elements of the sign. The best example of this Noise can be seen in the photograph of the skull and crossbones in the form of rust. The Noise creates an added feeling of the authenticity of danger to the sign. The photograph takes on an even greater meaning, when the told that it was taken at the former concentration camp, Auschwitz. Three of the photographs that fall into the same category are Thank Yo, Vinyl xchange and Guard Dog. Although there is no proof who created the Noise in these examples, it appears coincidental that they are all still legible. Thank Yo was a photo taken at an American drive-through, which coincides with the American slang word Yo. Due to the fact that the letter X is pronounced the same in the word Exchange, with or without the E the Noise in this example does not alter the communication of the sign. I have picked the Guard Dog photograph as once again the Noise in the form of rips actually enforces the Signified message of danger.
