The present Cathedral was commenced in 1190 with the South Transept and work spread rapidly to the crossing and the Choir which was complete by 1212. The nave and the lower part of the west front were complete by 1240 and the upper part of the facade and the reconstructed North Transept belong to the 14th century. Work was interrupted by the hundred years war and the North Tower was never built.

During the First World War, the nave was destroyed and the rest of the cathedral damaged. Restoration was not completed till 1937.
