Until 1622, Sens was one of the most important French Diocese taking preference over such places as Chartres, Paris and Orléans. The Cathedral was commenced circa 1130 and was the first Gothic Cathedral in France, its architect being William of Sens who used it as his model when constructing the chancel of Canterbury Cathedral.
