Miraculously conserved after his beheading, the "face" (the front portion of the skull) of St. John the Baptist was venerated for many centuries in Istanbul. During the fourth crusade, in 1204, the relic was captured and brought back to Amiens. There are "copies" of the face at St. Jean d'Angely in Poitou and in Damascus! According to the Cathedral, recent scientific tests have vouched for its authenticity.
