Abbaye aux Hommes, CAEN, Normandie

The Abbey Church of St. Etienne at Caen was founded in 1063 by William the Conqueror as a pennance for having married Mathilda against the Pope's wishes. It is one of the largest Romanesque churches in France and was consecrated in 1077. William was buried here in 1085. The choir is a later replacement dating from the 13th century but is still homogenous with the nave. The sexpartite vaulting of the nave is one the earliest examples of the style.
