CR SD40-2

ScaleTrains Conrail SD40-2

- removed included snowplow and replaced it with a DW -155 with DA – 2202 grab irons added. Painted snowplow black and grab irons white before gluing it to model with MU hoses coming out doors
- for cut levers painted the horizontal white portions black
- for grab irons forward of cab, left only the horizontal portions white, painted the rest Conrail blue
- masked windows, headlights, numberboards, sight glass and class lights
- faded the unit with a very light grey
- drybrushed couplers with a dark brown
- stippled burnt umber onto the conductor’s side battery box cover and the horizontal blue portions of the flange lube cabinet behind the cab on the same side of unit
- black wash in radiator grills and inertial intakes
- to weather the walkways and steps I first applied AIM medium gray weathering powder, then applied dark gray by blotting it on as “footprints”
- take AIM dark brown and liberaly apply it to the underframe beneath the sill with a soft brush
- I have a custom exhaust mix with about 12:1 flat black/dark brown that I use primarily on the roof
- I also have a custom dark earth mix of various browns that looks right to me. This was sprayed everywhere below the side sill, including fuel tank ends and pilots. I also did bow waves above each truck. Then moved the airbrush back to 12” away and did two passes per side with the model at a 45 degree angle (nose away/rear away), then one pass on each end. This covered the hood sides, nose and rear end with slight filth.
- open up AIM dark yellow, medium brown and dark brown. I used the stiff brush to very gently go in and pick up a few bristles at a time then stabbed the plow and rear pilot to get a spray affect. I worked from medium brown to dark yellow to dark brown. Repeat the effect on the ends of the fuel tank.
- I made a mix of the AIM yellow and two browns and took the stiff brush and lightly applied it below bottom of the journals on the sideframes and the bottom steps and areas around them.
- I then applied a matte finish by airbrush to seal everything.
