Californians will vote on Nov. 4 on an issue that has drawn lots of passion from both liberals and conservatives. Proposition 8, which would eliminate the right of same-sex couples to marry, seeks to overturn a May 2008 California Supreme Court ruling. That ruling said that a March 2000 election proposition that resulted in a state law limiting marriage to a relationship between a man and a woman, violated the equal protection clause of the California Constitution. As many Americans suspect that racism is part of the efforts to defeat Barack Obama for president, there is also a lot of evidence that some Yes on 8 proponents harbor homophobic tendencies.
