Humboldt Fire, Paradise, CA - June 2008

Here are some photos of the so-called Humboldt Fire, mostly taken on June 12, 2008. The fire destroyed 74 homes and damaged 20 more around Paradise, Calif., evacuated thousands of Paradise residents, and narrowly avoided burning up Butte College. There were eight injuries and about 75 livestock lost. I know people who've lost homes. It's hugely tragic. The fire started June 10 just east of Chico. It quickly flared up and spread into the very deep, very steep canyons in the adjacent Sierra foothills. The fire spread up and over three big canyons and as of June 17, the 23,344-acre fire was finally at 100 percent containment, according to CAL-Fire. Donna and I live in Magalia, in the mountains above Paradise, and were OK, as the fire never got closer than 4 miles away. My office and Donna's counseling office are in lower Paradise, and were in the shadow of the big mushroom cloud of billowing wildfire smoke all day June 12. I had my camera with me all day. I’m sad for those who've been harmed, those who lost their homes, and anyone who suffered a loss in the fire. It's been a tough few days.
