Everyone Orchestra, Sierra Nevada Big Room, Chico, Calif., June 19, 2013
The Everyone Orchestra, an ever changing ensemble of all-star jam-happy musicians conducted by Matt Butler, swept through Chico, California's, Sierra Nevada Brewery Big Room on Wednesday, June 19. The two-set show provided dancable grooves, textures and songs in sveeral formats, mixing rock, jazz, blues, disco, and more. The defining aspect of this band, in addition to the players, is Butler's passionate orchestrations. Far removed from a classical music conductor, the colorful front man, with his back to the audience for the most part, encouraged, cajoled, and commanded musical phrasings with his arms as well as the use of a couple of miniature dry-erase boards. A fine version of Creedence's "Stuck in Lodi" and a Sunshine Becker-sung version of "Thats' What Love Will Make You Do," a Little Milton hit that the Jerry Garcia Band frequently performed, were two highlights. The band on this night included Steve Kimock, John Kimock (son of Steve), Lebo, (ALO, Brokedown in Bakersfield, many others), Sunshine Becker (Furthur), Trevor Garrod (Tea Leaf Green), and Mike Sugar (Jambay).
