Between the upper watch tower and the Crown Ballroom, at the Del Coronado, there is a room not many people know about. It is a projection booth dating back to the Charlie Chaplin filmmaking era. I was given a private tour of the projection booth, by an Associate of the Hotel several years ago, and to my amazement, I saw (2) vintage Simplex 35mm film projectors. It appears, they have been sitting up there for well over 85 years. The projectors are angled downward, with their lenses pointing towards an area in the Crown Ballroom, through two hidden portals in the ballroom's ceiling panels (to accommodate two projectors), and down below where a screen would be set up for private screenings held by Mr. Charlie Chaplin, himself. It appears, the ocean air and a complete lack of any maintenance has gotten the best of these two beauties. I wonder if they are still there, today.
