The Fortress of Louisbourg - La Forteresse de Louisbourg

Located in the southeastern part of Cape Breton Island, the Fortress of Louisbourg was a fortified seaport established by France when it ruled Nova Scotia in the early 18th century. Both a military stronghold and the administrative capital of France's territory in Atlantic Canada, Louisbourg was captured by New Englanders and the British, handed back to France, and captured again by the British. It was finally abandoned in 1768. About one-fifth of Louisbourg was reconstructed beginning in the 1960s and it is now a National Historic Site of Canada. Other galleries from our recent Nova Scotia trip can be found at the bottom of my main page. There are more pictures from Louisbourg in my " Windows of Louisbourg" gallery.
