This tourist trap is no where near representative of the DMZ, except for the old locomtove in the pictiure, which used to be on the track that now extends across the bridge and the Imjin river when it once halted at the Imjingak Pavilla building, it did not exist 30 years ago! Freedom Bridge in those days was the ONLY point of egress off the MSR #1 to the DMZ and Panmunjom, Camp Liberty Bell, Camp Greaves, Etc.. It was 1 lane only, vehicular traffic only, and was always wired to blow at a seconds notice! The bridge of freedom was no more than an acess siding for North Bound Vehicles to wait for clearance to cross the bridge after south bound traffic cleared it. I know this first hand, because I was stationed at Greaves and Liberty Bell from Nov 1979 to March 1981 with the 1st Bn, 9th Infantry (Manchu), the forward most deployed Infantry Battalion in the Untied States Army. My "duty" Manchu Bely Buckle still lies at the bottom of the Imjin River where I tossed it as I crossed freedom brodge for the last time, 3-3-1981!
