Before World War II this was the main synagogue in Czernowitz. When I visited in 1992 it was a cinema. "Conan the Barbarian" was showing.
Although I did not go inside, I learned subsequently that inside there is a memorial to Joseph Schmidt (1904-1942)
a well-known tenor and actor who grew up in Czernowitz and served as a cantor in the Czernowitz synagogue in the 1920s.
The original synagogue was larger and featured a dome. It was partially destroyed first by the Nazis, then by the Soviets.
This building was partially rebuilt before being converted to a cinema.
According to Wikipedia, a new synagogue was opened in Czernowitz in 2001.
